NextGen POS: Offline-First Developer Sprint
IT'S AN ONLINE HACKATHON – Physical retail is a brutal stress test for software. When a line of customers forms at a checkout counter, cashiers cannot afford a three-second loading spinner, a dropped Wi-Fi connection, or a frozen terminal. Yet most Point of Sale (POS) software today relies on fragile cloud architectures and bloated legacy hardware.
We are building the next generation of high-speed, local-first retail software—and we want the sharpest systems, backend, and full-stack engineers to tackle the hardest engineering problems in physical retail.
Whether you are looking to win cash bounties, demonstrate systems-engineering mastery, or explore a funded technical co-founder / senior contractor role, this sprint is designed to let your code do the talking.
🚀 The Challenge Tracks
Choose one or more tracks to build for:
Track 1: The Local-First Sync Engine (Core Systems)
-
The Problem: Two terminals in the same retail store go offline while ringing up items simultaneously. When the internet reconnects, the cloud database must reconcile inventory balances without race conditions, duplicate transactions, or lost sales.
-
The Goal: Build an idempotent, client-side caching and background synchronization system (using IndexedDB, SQLite, CRDTs, or event-sourcing) that reliably reconciles batch transactions with a remote backend.
Track 2: The Universal Hardware Bridge (Web & Hardware)
-
The Problem: Modern POS apps should run on any browser or tablet, but hardware (thermal receipt printers, cash drawers, and barcode scanners) usually requires bulky proprietary drivers.
-
The Goal: Build an in-browser or lightweight client SDK that connects directly to receipt printers via WebUSB / Web Bluetooth (ESC/POS protocol) and processes high-speed barcode scanner inputs without dropped keystrokes.
Track 3: Real-Time Retail Microservices (Cloud Run & Analytics)
-
The Problem: Retail stores generate spiky traffic—extreme bursts during rush hours and total silence at night.
-
The Goal: Build a containerized microservice optimized for Google Cloud Run that handles real-time receipt generation, daily Z-report reconciliations, or automated inventory stock-out alerting.
