It’s that time of year again. Scuffathon is back!! 💀💻
Scuffathon is CISSA’s annual beginner-friendly hackathon where the goal is simple: make something stupid.
Whether this is your 1st or 6️⃣7️⃣th hackathon, all skill levels and backgrounds are welcome. Come with your friends, or come solo and we’ll help you find some fellow scuffers on the night.
This year’s theme is:
Modern Problems, Worse Solutions
The world is full of problems. Some are complicated. Some are annoying. Some really aren’t problems at all.
Your job is to make them worse.
The track is intentionally pretty open, so you can take it in whatever direction you want. If you have no idea where to start, here are a few examples:
💰 Monetise It
Take something that absolutely does not need to make money and figure out how to make money from it anyway.
Put basic features behind a paywall. Add a premium tier nobody asked for. Turn a completely normal everyday activity into a subscription service. Charge people to solve a problem your own product created.
If you can look at your idea and think, “someone would definitely try to pitch this to investors,” you’re probably on the right track.
😈 Malicious Compliance
Same product. Opposite purpose.
Build something that technically does exactly what it is supposed to do while completely defeating the reason anyone would want to use it.
Follow the requirements perfectly. Ignore common sense completely.
🖱️ UX From Hell
Good design is intuitive, accessible, and frictionless.
We don’t do that here.
Take a familiar interface and make every interaction needlessly difficult. Hide buttons. Move things when users try to click them. Add seventeen confirmation screens. Make the loading screen longer than the actual experience.
The worse it feels to use, the better.
