Civic Tech Projects From Winners of Hackathon

Join us for an evening with Civic Tech Brampton as we spotlight the winning projects from Algoma’s first-ever ThunderHacks hackathon, all built around one theme: making campus life more accessible and empowering for students. ThunderHacks challenged Algoma University students to design tools that make campus life easier to navigate—academically, professionally, and personally. In this showcase, we’ll walk through the top projects and explore how AI and VR can help students understand their options, plan their careers, and make data-driven decisions about their future. Our first-place winners, Team Mandalorians, built an AI-powered system that analyzes a student’s current resume, suggests possible career paths, and recommends primary courses, electives, and skills to help them reach their long-term goals. It’s like having a personalized academic and career advisor that understands where you are now and where you want to go. Our second-place team, Team Joel, created a VR AI agent that turns academic performance into a spatial, immersive experience. The system spawns 3D bar charts of grades, highlighting where students are doing well and where they’re struggling, and then extends beyond grades into a spatial career navigator—helping students explore trajectories, options, and trade-offs in a way that’s visual and intuitive.
