BYTEATHON 2026 is a 24-hour innovation and technology hackathon organised by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education (NICHE), Kanniyakumari.
BYTEATHON brings together innovators, developers, programmers, designers, engineers, creators, and problem-solvers to transform real-world challenges into practical, innovative, and scalable solutions.
Participants will work in teams to analyse problem statements, design solutions, select suitable technologies, develop prototypes, and demonstrate their implementation before an expert judging panel.

Competition Format
BYTEATHON 2026 will be conducted in two stages.
Round 1 – Online Preliminary Round
Round 1 is an online idea and solution submission round.
Teams can choose from five curated problem statements or participate under the Open Innovation category.
Participants are expected to identify the problem clearly, propose an innovative solution, explain its technical implementation, and demonstrate the feasibility and potential real-world impact of their idea.

3. Prototype – Optional for Round 1
A prototype, mock-up, proof of concept, repository, or demonstrable implementation may be submitted where applicable.
While a complete prototype is not mandatory for Round 1, teams capable of demonstrating technical progress are encouraged to do so.
Round 1 Deadline : 2 October 2026
All submissions must be completed before the announced deadline.
Submissions will undergo a multi-stage evaluation process, after which 30 teams will be shortlisted for the BYTEATHON Grand Finale.
Round 2 – 24-Hour Offline Grand Finale
The shortlisted teams will be invited to participate in the 24-hour offline BYTEATHON Grand Finale at Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education (NICHE), Kanniyakumari.
Grand Finale Date: 15 October 2026
To maintain fairness among all finalists, teams will receive the applicable final-round problem statements/challenges as instructed by the organisers for the Grand Finale.
During the 24-hour hackathon, teams will:
Analyse the challenge

Build and integrate components

Develop a functional prototype
Prepare their final presentation
Demonstrate the solution before the judging panel
At the end of the hackathon, every team must present a working prototype or demonstrable implementation and explain its architecture, technology stack, design decisions, functionality, feasibility, limitations, and potential real-world impact.
Judges may question teams regarding any part of their implementation to verify their understanding and contribution.

Team Rules
Each team can consist of 1 to 4 members.
Solo participation is allowed.
Inter-college teams are allowed.
Inter-specialisation and inter-department teams are allowed.
Participants from different academic years may form a team.
Cross-disciplinary teams are encouraged.
A participant may be registered with only one team.
Each team must nominate one member as the Team Leader.
Participant details submitted during registration must be accurate.
Identification may be requested by the organisers wherever required for verification.
Evaluation Criteria
Projects may be evaluated based on:
1. Problem Understanding
How clearly the team understands the selected challenge and its underlying requirements.
2. Innovation and Originality
The uniqueness, creativity, and novelty of the proposed approach.
3. Technical Implementation
Quality of architecture, engineering, programming, integration, algorithms, technologies, and implementation decisions.
4. Prototype Functionality
How effectively the prototype demonstrates the proposed solution.
5. Feasibility
Whether the solution can realistically be implemented, deployed, maintained, or expanded.
6. Real-World Applicability
The relevance of the solution to practical problems and real users.
7. Impact
Potential social, technological, commercial, environmental, institutional, or user impact, depending on the problem.
8. Scalability
Ability of the solution to grow beyond the prototype stage.
9. User Experience
Usability, accessibility, interface design, and overall experience where applicable.
10. Presentation and Demonstration
Clarity and effectiveness of the team's final presentation and live demonstration.
11. Technical Understanding
The team's ability to explain, justify, debug, modify, and defend its own implementation during interaction with the judging panel.
Use of AI and Development Tools
AI-assisted development tools are permitted in BYTEATHON unless explicitly restricted for a particular problem statement.

Judges may request participants to explain, modify, reproduce, debug, or demonstrate portions of their solution to verify their understanding and contribution.
Using AI as a development tool is permitted. Submitting work that the team cannot explain or falsely representing externally developed work as its own is not permitted.
Open-Source and Pre-Built Components
Pre-existing open-source libraries, APIs, frameworks, SDKs, development tools, datasets, models, templates, and publicly available resources may be used.
However:
Their use must be disclosed wherever applicable.
Previously developed components used by the team must be declared.
Teams must clearly distinguish between existing components and work developed specifically for BYTEATHON.
External resources must not be misrepresented as original work created by the team.
The focus of evaluation will be on how effectively the team designs, integrates, implements, and understands its complete solution.
Plagiarism and Originality
The solution submitted must represent the genuine work and contribution of the registered team.
The following may result in disqualification:
Copying another team's solution
Submitting another person's project
Submitting an existing project without disclosure
Plagiarism
Misrepresenting third-party work as original
Falsifying implementation or results
Using prohibited resources where restrictions have specifically been announced
The organising committee and judges may conduct technical verification wherever necessary.
General Rules
Participants must complete registration before the specified deadline.
Participants may compete only as part of their registered team.
Team members should not be changed after the registration deadline without prior approval from the organisers.
A participant cannot represent more than one team.
Teams must work on only one selected problem statement or Open Innovation submission unless otherwise instructed.
All required submissions must be provided within the specified deadlines.
Late or incomplete submissions may not be evaluated.
Participants must follow the prescribed submission format.
Teams are responsible for ensuring that submitted presentation links, video links, repositories, documents, prototypes, and other materials are accessible to the evaluation panel.
Offensive, unlawful, deliberately harmful, unsafe, or unethical projects may be rejected or disqualified.
Participants must maintain professional conduct throughout BYTEATHON.
Harassment, deliberate damage to property, misconduct, or violation of institutional rules may lead to disqualification.
Final-round participants are responsible for bringing their own laptops, chargers, development environments, adapters, and specialised personal equipment unless specifically stated otherwise.
Internet access, mentoring facilities, or other resources offered by the organisers will be subject to availability.
Participants are responsible for maintaining appropriate backups of their work.
Teams must comply with venue and institutional regulations during the offline Grand Finale.
Judges may evaluate both the final product and the team's understanding of how it was built.
The decision of the judging panel and organising committee will be final.
The organising committee reserves the right to modify the event schedule, rules, problem statements, judging process, or competition format where reasonably necessary.
Important changes will be communicated through official BYTEATHON channels.

Winners will be selected by the official judging panel according to the announced evaluation criteria.
Certificates and other recognition or opportunities associated with BYTEATHON will be communicated through official event channels.
Finalists and Grand Finale
A total of 30 teams will be shortlisted from the preliminary round for the offline Grand Finale.
The BYTEATHON 24-Hour Grand Finale will be conducted at:

Food and accommodation for eligible finalists during the final event will be provided by the organisers as per the arrangements and instructions communicated to shortlisted teams.
