Introduction Hack for Earth — Green AI Hackathon 2025 (by the Green-Reliable-Software-Budapest community, with support from the Kaggle Community Olympiad) is a month-long, open-source challenge to (A) build greener AI systems and/or (B) use AI for real environmental impact. Bring locally relevant ideas in energy, agriculture, water, transport, waste, health, air quality, or early-warning systems. Ship a working prototype, measure your footprint, and share your code. - Online competition (Kaggle): join, run the starter notebooks, and make a placeholder submission → https://www.kaggle.com/competitions/kaggle-community-olympiad-hack-4-earth-green-ai - Onsite finale & awards (Budapest): Demo Day on Nov 3 → https://www.meetup.com/green-reliable-software-budapest/events/311310625/ Two tracks (choose one or both): - Track A — Build Green AI: same task, less energy/CO₂e/water (quantization, pruning/distillation, data-efficiency, carbon-aware scheduling, low-power/edge). - Track B — Use AI for Green Impact: apply AI to cut emissions or boost resilience; show impact math (tCO₂e avoided/yr, m³ water saved, people protected), with assumptions + sensitivity. Timeline *All times CET (Europe/Budapest).* - Team Ceremony (async): Oct 13 → Oct 26 Matchmaking on Discord, mentor intros, light onboarding. Late joiners welcome. - Topic & Problem Statement due: Thu Oct 24, 23:59 One-pager: problem, users, datasets/APIs, baseline plan, chosen green practices. - Hacking & Measurement Discipline: Oct 25 → Oct 31 Capture baseline → carbon-aware → optimized runs. Record kWh → CO₂e (and optional water), runtime, quality. - Submission deadline: Thu Oct 31, 23:59 Repo + Evidence + 2–3 min demo video + Kaggle placeholder submission. - Demo Day & Awards (Budapest + livestream): Mon Nov 10 Expo hour, 5-min demos, 3-min Q&A, awards & next-steps clinic. Weekly cadence: Wed office hours, Thu speaker session, Sun summary & reminders. Prizes - Grand Prize: $2,000 - Build Green AI — Lowest Footprint: $1,000 - Use AI for Green Impact — Highest Benefit: $1,000 - Budapest Spotlight — Local Impact: $500 - Rookie Team — Students/First-timers: $250 - Community Choice — Public Vote: $250 Eligibility - Open globally; individuals or teams (recommended ≤5). - Participants must be 18+ (or local age of majority). - Open-source required (MIT/Apache-2.0 or similar OSI license). - Submit on DoraHacks to be eligible for prizes. Scored on what you prove (100 pts total): 1. Technical Quality & Reproducibility (25) — sound approach, clean repo, run-it instructions. 2. Footprint Discipline / SCI (25) — credible before/after for the same task (energy kWh → CO₂e kg; optional water), method documented; SCI per unit if used. 3. Impact Potential (25) — clear users/setting; impact math with assumptions + low/med/high sensitivity. 4. Openness & Storytelling (15) — clarity, diagrams, honest limits/risks, next steps. 5. Data Fitness & Ethics (10) — data card (appropriateness, readiness, reliability/bias, sensitivity/licensing, sufficiency). Disqualifiers: unsafe/illegal use, hidden private code, missing attribution/licensing, or unverifiable claims.
